A Health And Hygiene Testimony from Uganda

Caption: The group of students from Kaojja Secondary School in Uganda that completed a WMI questionnaire on Health and Hygiene and won these "sanitary kits" - washbasin, soap, toothbrush, etc.

Here is a testimony from our Health And Hygiene Specialist in Uganda, Rita.

I greet you in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. The Lord has been good to us and I am so grateful for His goodness. I have been involved in facilitating a workshop for health and hygiene trainers in 4 communities. It has been wonderful to see how people havea great desire to know the relationship between disease / ill healthand water, sanitation and hygiene. People are really appreciative of the knowledge they get and always request that we visit them regularly as that can inspire positivebehavioral change. I have also been able to go into schools and it’s amazing how quickly children learn to promote good hygiene and sanitation behavior.

I would like to share with you this testimony from one of the trainers from the Kasambya sub county. His name is Hussein Sebowa and was part of the 3 day workshop for H&H trainers in Kasambya. After the training, he went home determined to improve his latrine by putting shutters and a wall around it for privacy and convenience but he was reluctant about putting in a tippy tap - which is the best option for washing hands after using the latrine. We had studied this in the training but he still used the jerry can outside his house to wash his hands. (Note: A tippy tap is a simple hands free hand washing device) He was challenged by his 10 year old daughter who erected a tippy tap near the latrine before he did so! When he asked where the girl had got the idea from, the girl told him that she had learn from a woman from Water Missions who had educated their school on water, sanitation and hygiene issues. The man was surprised and reminded his fellow health and hygiene trainers not to leave children out of their training activities! Children are great learners!

Ritah.
