Catastrophe in Haiti

The people of Haiti need your help now!

A massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince late yesterday afternoon. Water Missions International needs your help to bring immediate relief to the victims of this disaster, which has occurred in one of the most impoverished countries in the world.

The earthquake struck just before 5:00pm EST on Tuesday, January 12, just 10 miles west of the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Aftershocks measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale rocked the region even further into shambles.

Although communications in Haiti are down, there are already reports of excessive damage and devastation. At least one hospital completely collapsed, leaving people screaming for help. “Substantial damage and casualties” are expected and gaining access to safe water is critical.

Water Missions International has full-time staff on the ground in Port-au-Prince and we are poised to respond as quickly as possible to the survivors of the quake. Please do whatever you can to help.

Ways You Can Help

Pray –

Please pray for the safety of our staff members in Haiti, who were stationed in Port-au-Prince when the quake struck. At this time, we have been unable to make contact with them and are unaware of their situation.

Please also pray for the people of Haiti whose lives have been turned upside down by this catastrophic event. It is our hope that through this tragedy, God’s light will shine through.

Pray that Water Missions receives the immediate outpouring of financial assistance needed to respond quickly and provide safe water for earthquake survivors. Prayers are also needed for our ministry partners who play such a vital role in our disaster response efforts.

Give –

Please donate on a weekly or monthly basis because
their need for assistance is enormous.

Of all the various ways to contribute to the Haiti disaster response, contributions to WMI (online, other) are among the most urgently needed to help mitigate the likely waterborne illnesses soon to occur and provide clean water until Haiti's infrastructure is repaired. Peace & blessings to George, Molly, & their teams in this worthy endeavor.

Please join me in supporting Water Missions in this and other water emergencies. When children have to drink sewage-contaminated water, it's always an emergency! I can think of no finer relief agency to support in the relief efforts in Haiti.

Thank you for all you are doing for the victims in Haiti!!! I am passing your message to my friends to let them know about the incredible work you are doing for there. I pray they will join in support of your efforts to provide safe drinking water for the people of Haiti and to spare them from the further tragedy of contracting water-born illnesses by having to drink contaminated water at the wake of this massive devastation.

When catastrophes occur, I research charities looking for smaller ones which are not opportunistic jumping from crisis to crisis. Having lived in Summerville for many years, I had heard of Water Missions. I checked it out on Charity Navigator and saw that it was not sitting on millions of dollars and that its CEO gets paid a reasonable $100,000. It had four of four stars from Charity Navigator, the highest rating. So I selected it for my donation. A young nature photographer named Sirajul Hossain from Bangladesh had waived a photo-fee for an article in the magazine I publish and asked me to donate it instead to a group helping in Haiti. So I added that and look forward to hearing of your progress in the field. May God bless you all.

I have been blessed my whole life. I have just retired from being a water treatment plant supervisor in Northern California. I have a grade 4 (of 5) water treatment license, grade 3 (of 5) water distribution operator license as well as a grade 1 (of 5) waste water (sewer treatment) license. I have run many types of heavy equipment and I am single. Let me know if I can help. I pray for your success as I know how important water is. It is life giving. I have ties to Charleston and know of the excellent work that you do. Carry on!
