Location: The Jaguey Grande Hospital Iluminado Rodriguez, Jaguey Grande Municipality
Project Description: In response to the aftermath of Hurricane Michelle that hit Cuba in November 2001, International Aid and Water Missions International have partnered to provide safe water to Jaguey Grande in Matanzas Province, one of the regions most devastated by the storm.
International Aid and hospital staff assembled the LWTS™ at the hospital, which now provides filtered water for use inside the hospital facility
The Jaguey Grande Hospital Iluminado Rodriguez is a hospital that serves the Municipality of Jaguey Grande and a wide district that includes five towns - Jaguey Grande, Torriente, Cienega de Zapata, Argamonte and Australia, with a total population of approximately 60,000 people. It also serves as the sole referral hospital for 40 high schools, as well as a number of floating patients from nearby municipalities. The 101-bed facility has over 400 staff, including 42 medical doctors, and attends to 1,000 people a day.
A second outlet (pictured running down wall at right) runs outside the facility to provide water to other staff and the community. "The benefit of this donation is incalculable, " commented the Hospital Director.
In consultation with community leaders and the Christian Reformed Church, the local church partner, International Aid and hospital staff connected the system to the hospital's water source and secured it on an elevated area for the most strategic use of the system. Not only will the system help meet immediate needs, but it will also impact the overall health of the community. Hospital personnel have been trained in the operation of the system and are responsible for maintenance, oversight and protection of the unit.
