Thanks to the generous support and efforts of a private family, Water Missions International successfully commissioned a Living Water™ Treatment System (LWTS™) for Medawachchiya Hospital in Sri Lanka. The support provided both sustainable, clean water and the Living Water message of Jesus Christ to the hospital at a time of great need.
The people of Sri Lanka in the area of Medawachchiya Hospital have had their hopes renewed and their lives changed through WMI’s tireless efforts to provide such safe drinking water systems to those areas most in need. Patients as well as doctors, nurses, and employees at Medawachchiya Hospital have safe water to use for cooking, cleaning, and drinking, as well as for use in daily operations. The need for this water was great; previously all water used at the hospital had dangerous and unsanitary levels of bacteria—levels nearly too high to measure. After water was treated in the LWTS™ however, these levels were reduced to zero. This new, safe water can be used now not only at the hospital, without the danger of unsanitary bacteria levels, but also provided to the surrounding community.
The water system at Medawachchiya Hospital serves more than 6,000 people at the hospital and in the surrounding community.
The administration at Medawachchiya Hospital will be in charge of the operation, maintenance, and minimal expenses for the system. As the current source of raw water is an underground water tank, a WMI technician will be working with the administration to change the water source as soon as possible for even better results. After the initial installation of the system, sustainability training was carried out for members of the administration to instruct them in operation, maintenance, and financing in order to keep the system running smoothly and correctly. Further training, including that in health and hygiene in tandem with the system, will be carried out as needed. WMI will monitor the system for a period of at least 12 months following the installation.
After installation, hospital workers tasted the fresh, safe drinking water form the LWTS™ —perhaps the first taste of truly safe drinking water for many of the employees. One worker was so excited and surprised at the results that he had to taste the new water right away. The workers were happy to learn about th
e system in a series of training sessions. A finely-crafted, porcelain, tiled outlet, with attached faucets, provides the outdoor channel for the new, fresh, safe drinking water.
Although the community may be considered small to some, the importance of safe, healthy drinking water is unparalleled for any community, regardless of size. It forms the basis for the greater overall health of a community and can lead to many improvements once in place.
The Living Water™ Treatment System at Medawachchiya Hospital in Sri Lanka will continue to benefit the hospital and the surrounding community for years to come.
