The recent and recurring devastation in Haiti has touched the hearts of millions around the world. The swiftness of the events that warped the earth and brought down the walls of homes, schools and businesses was matched by the swiftness of the response to those events--a response measured in aid, medicine, money, faith and love. We should remember that numbers and statistics rarely serve to illuminate the human face of so much life lost or injured. Each individual human being affected by this calamity had his entire world disrupted and thrown into chaos. And each person is as important as the greater picture of loss.
Staff members of Water Missions International are on the ground at Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas, installing water purification and chlorination equipment and bringing such forms of aid as WMI can muster. At Grace Children's Hospital, one staff member, Julio, met a four-year-old girl, Martine, who is living at the IDP camp on the hospital grounds because her family's home was destroyed. When questioned by Martine, Julio explained that he was testing the water in order to make it much safer for Martine to drink. She was so interested and happy to learn of this that she followed Julio around, asking question after question and filling water bottles for his test samples. She said that she wanted to help him because he was there to help her. When Julio finished and prepared to say goodbye, Martine gave him a kiss.
This young girl, who had lost so much so quickly, still knew the warmth and generosity of spirit that comes from helping others and being helped. She will undoubtedly remember these events for the rest of her life, but to assuage the sorrow and pain of loss she will have joy and love in her memories. The work done by Water Missions International, and countless other organizations like it, continues and will continue for some time to come. Assistance is still greatly needed. There are many more children just like Martine who need help. Please join us today.
