In the Aftermath of Disaster

Those we seek to serve are barely surviving. It may appear that they have little to lose, but then disaster strikes and what little they have is taken away.

Safe water is a critical and urgent need in the aftermath of any disaster. Existing water sources become contaminated, people are squeezed into refugee camps and temporary housing, sanitation is poor or non-existent and the threat of wide-spread disease becomes a daily burden.

Water Missions International’s uniquely-designed water treatment equipment allows us to provide safe drinking water quickly after a disaster. In fact, a Living Water™ Treatment System can be transported easily by pick-up truck to remote communities that may be otherwise unreachable by other modes of transportation due to compromised roads and raging rivers. Once in place, the system can be assembled and operating within a matter of a few hours.

Since our first disaster response after Hurricane Mitch in 1998, Water Missions International has provided safe water and hope to hundreds of thousands of survivors in more than 20 countries around the world. Our emergency efforts have been in response to nearly every type of natural disaster, including earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, hurricanes and cyclones. Most notably, WMI responded in a considerable way to the South Asian Tsunami of 2004, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and last year’s earthquake in China and cyclone in Myanmar.

Sadly, man-caused disasters can be as devastating as natural disasters. All too often people find themselves in disaster-like situations, with no food, shelter or safe drinking water, as a result of political conflict and war. WMI is quick to respond in these instances as well, providing safe, clean water for those in need. Recently, our ministry provided access to safe drinking water for refugees in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps during the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. WMI is currently responding to war victims in Sri Lanka as they struggle to recover from 25 years of civil war.

At Water Missions International, we believe our response after disaster, whether natural or man-made, is an opportunity not only to provide much needed relief, but also to make a lasting impact on communities and individuals around the world. Whenever a crisis abates, WMI works to redeploy our water treatment equipment to another needy community within the same country or region, thus continuing our mission to quench the physical and spiritual thirst of those in need.
