On May 29th, Tropical Storm Agatha, the first storm of the 2010 Pacific Hurricane Season, hit landfall over the country of Guatemala in Central America. According to figures released by the Guatemalan government, a total of 172 people have been killed in the resulting floods. Nearly 45,000 people are now homeless and people have watched as their possessions and livelihoods wash away.
Water Missions was eager to respond to the disaster, quickly communicating with Operation Blessing in Zacapa, Guatemala. On June the 3rd, a Honduran technician for Water Missions International traveled with a water system to train Operation Blessing technicians to operate and maintain the LWTS during the Emergency Response period. This system is currently providing safe drinking water to several thousand people in the Zacapa area who have been displaced and had no access to safe water.
The arrival of the system was a moment of hope for the community since many have been suffering without their homes, water, and, in some cases, without clothes or food.
