Sumatra Still Struggles

Just over two weeks have passed since a 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook west Sumatra, reducing homes and businesses to rubble and leaving millions of people without shelter, electricity or safe water. Because of WMI’s existing country program in Indonesia, we were able to react immediately to this disaster situation, making us one of the first to reach earthquake victims in need.

Less than two days after the quake struck, WMI was providing thousands of gallons of clean, purified drinking water for as many as 10,000 survivors in Padang, one of the worst hit areas. Thousands more quake victims received safe water in Pariaman later in the week. Additional water storage tanks and purification units were airlifted from Jakarta, and WMI is now working with ministry partners to determine the most suitable locations for them.

Although much has been accomplished in the aftermath of the quake, there is still much work to be done. Safe water still tops the list of immediate needs among the most devastated areas, especially within the cities of Padang and Pariaman. Please join us as we reach out to the people of Indonesia with life-saving, safe water.

How You Can Help!

  • Donate:
WMI needs funds to support this disaster effort. It is our mission and our hearts’ greatest desire to help those in need of safe water; however, we cannot do it without your help. It is only by working together that we can save lives. Please give today. Every dollar will make a difference!

  • Pray:
Our Indonesian staff has been working around the clock, with very little sleep, to help bring safe water to earthquake victims. Please join us in praying for their safety and stamina as they continue to serve in this way. We also covet your prayers for the arrival of funds to support this WMI relief effort. Please also pray for all the people who have been affected by this catastrophic event.
