Clean, safe water really does transform the lives of people in developing countries. But without the proper preparation, safe water can bring an unexpected problem to a community. Accessible, clean water changes a community on such a fundamental level that it influences every area of life. People need to understand how to manage the powerful effect of safe water and sanitation. And many times people aren’t convinced that contaminated water is what is making them sick. People need ongoing coaching to fully realize the effect of safe water. That’s why we strive to place a water treatment system in a community where we are making a long-term commitment to that community.

We go in several months before the water treatment system arrives and, through local community leaders, work to prepare the village for the new paradigm they’re about to enter. By combining health and hygiene education, operation and maintenance training and micro-enterprise coaching with the safe water systems, each person in the community—from the oldest grandmother to the youngest infant—can fully experience the life-saving blessing of safe water. It’s called community development, and it’s essential to providing a sustainable long-term water solution to each village, each family and each person.
