Why should I volunteer at Water Missions International?
Volunteering with WMI offers a unique opportunity to volunteer locally while having a global impact. There are nearly 1 billion people in the world who do not have safe water to drink. You can make a difference!
How do I become a volunteer?
Simply click on the button below to send us your contact information. You will be contacted by our Volunteer Coordinator who will register you for Water Missions International Orientation at our facility. After Orientation, you will meet with the Volunteer Coordinator to complete an application process and discuss how your skills, abilities and experience can be partnered with our current needs.
What is a Water Missions International Orientation?
Water Missions International Orientation provides an overview of Water Missions International and volunteering, a tour of our facility and an explanation of the Living Water Treatment System. Orientations are offered once per month on a Wednesday at 3pm and last approximately 2 hours.
What is the time commitment to volunteer?
Some volunteer opportunities require a weekly commitment to a scheduled shift, while many other opportunities allow for flexible scheduling. The actual time commitment varies between projects.
Do you need volunteers on the weekends?
The WMI production facility and offices are closed on the weekends. However, there are some volunteer opportunities available on weekends. For example, we sometimes have special events that occur on weekends, and there are some projects that can be worked on from home.
What volunteer opportunities are available for groups?
Help Water Missions International spread awareness of the global water crisis and our organization’s mission to solve it. There are countless ways to help – just be creative! Organize a WMI event such as a sporting event, car wash, bake sale, BBQ, or even a benefit concert. This is any easy way to volunteer with a group from your work, church or club. Be sure to complete a WMI third party fundraising form to obtain approval for your event.
Or, have your group choose a country project and raise money to send a Living Water Treatment System to people in that country who need safe water.
Volunteer groups are also needed to assist with WMI’s annual Walk for Water. Volunteer tasks may include setting up, holding signs, carrying flags, working children’s activities, helping with registration and concessions, cleaning up and more. Additionally, volunteers will be needed during the weeks leading up to the Walk for Water to assist with the preparation of the event.
If your group would like to learn more about WMI, we invite you to visit our facility for a presentation and tour which takes approximately two hours. Presentations and tours can be scheduled during the week, or on Saturdays when needed. Please click on the link below or call our office to schedule a tour for your group.
Should I keep track of my volunteer hours?
Yes. It is important to sign in and out when volunteering in our Charleston facility. When volunteering outside of our facility, please keep track of your hours and email them to Volunteer Coordinator at the end of each month.
Mileage to and from our facility while volunteering can be deducted on your income taxes. However, we must have a record of your volunteer hours to support an audit.
What should I wear?
Volunteers working in the production facility should wear comfortable clothing that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. Although long pants are preferred, long shorts are okay during summer months.
Business casual attire is preferred for volunteers working in the office.
If I am unable to volunteer on a scheduled day, what should I do?
Please contact the staff member with whom you are working or the Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible.
Do you send volunteers to other countries?
Installations of our systems are completed by our Country Programs staff who live around the world and our ministry partners. We do not currently have a volunteer program designed to send volunteers to other countries.
