Starting early last week, May 16, intense storms, accompanied by heavy rains, hit Colombo, the Capitol of Sri Lanka. Water Missions worked alongside the Sri Lankan Government to provide safe water to those affected by the flooding. Having an office with full-time staff in Colombo, SL meant Water Missions was in a good position and well prepared to respond to this disaster. What was first thought to be a passing storm continued for the next two to three days. Traffic was disrupted, major roads were cut off, schools closed down, offices could not open, and some passengers heading to the airport were airlifted by helicopter.
On Monday, May 17, WMI readied itself to respond. Working alongside the Disaster Management Center (DMC), WMI chose an area that had been hit particularly hard. One LWTS was prepared, and transportation was arranged by the DMC. Once the system was installed, people came with small containers, eager for a drink of safe water. Navy boats were used to carry safe water across many dirty bodies of water surrounding and separating villages. Meanwhile, a tractor was arranged by the local community to transport water to the surrounding villages from the LWTS, which was installed within one of the Buddhist Temples. The response of Water Missions has been greatly appreciated by the Local and Central authority of Sri Lanka, and has been an excellent opportunity to partner with the local government.
